Our Climate Pledge

Sabey Data Centers has pioneered sustainability within the data center industry with a focus on whole-building energy efficiency, which preserves our natural resources, reduces emissions, and ultimately boosts our customers’ bottom lines. Our core value of insightful stewardship advises our commitments to doing what is right for our environment and communities, team members and tenants.

Net Zero Carbon by 2029

Sabey Data Centers envisions science-based, portfolio-wide operations powered by carbon-free renewable energy at scale. Toward that end, we endeavor to make our entire real estate portfolio net-zero carbon by 2029 by implementing a three-scope plan.

Scope 1: Direct Emissions

Scope 1 emissions include direct emissions from operations. Specifically, diesel emissions from backup generators and fugitive emissions from HVAC refrigerants.

Scope 2: Indirect Emissions

Scope 2 emissions include indirect emissions from purchased electricity. Specifically, purchased electricity used to power data center infrastructure.

Scope 3: Other Emissions

Scope 3 emissions include all other indirect emissions, including indirect emissions from tenant IT equipment and emissions from commuting.

Sustainability Report

We’re happy to share our 2022 Sustainability Report. This report tells the story of what Sabey is doing to cut our Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions and hit our 2029 net-zero carbon pledge.

Partners & certifications

We’ve worked tirelessly to become partners with some of the best and brightest organizations leading the charge on sustainability.

Better Buildings Challenge

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge is aimed at reducing energy use throughout businesses’ portfolios by at least 20% over 10 years. By 2017, we had improved energy performance by 42% from a 2014 baseline, far surpassing this goal and were recognized as the Highest Energy Saving Data Center Operator by the DOE.

Better Climate Challenge

Sabey signed on to the Better Climate Challenge, committing to a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across our 3.8 million-square-foot portfolio over 10 years.

Sabey is a proud ENERGY STAR Partner that consistently ranks at the very highest levels for building certifications by meeting strict EPA energy performance standards. A minimum score of 75 signifies that a building outperforms at least 75% of similar data centers, yet our facilities routinely score up to 100 on the scale.

Science Based Targets

Sabey opted to pursue the Science-Based Target Initiative’s most ambitious goal: reducing absolute scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50% from a 2018 baseline and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The SBTi independently assessed and approved our target and methods.

Green Lease Leaders

Sabey received Gold recognition from the Green Lease Leaders program. The Green Lease Leaders program recognizes forward-thinking companies who foster high-performance by incorporating both energy efficiency and sustainability into its operating requirements.

The Climate Pledge

In 2021, Sabey Data Centers became one of the first 150 signatories to The Climate Pledge. This collaborative initiative, co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism, commits to reach net-zero carbon by 2040.

Powering our data centers with inexpensive, renewable electricity

Sabey’s emphasis on hydroelectricity is motivated by two things: renewability and profitability. Hydropower is clean power that helps us meet our sustainability goals while also providing a lower total cost to our tenants.
